It’s been several weeks now since the initial evacuations in Fort MacMurray. Although the majority of people will generally experience little psychological distress from such events, there is the possibility that some may experience significant symptoms. Problems with sleep, anxiety, appetite, etc, are generally considered normal for 4-6 weeks following a traumatic event. If symptoms linger beyond 6 weeks, psychologists start looking at diagnosis such as post traumatic stress disorder. In a recent interview, Dr Heather Macintosh summed up this issue beautifully.
